Emergency Info

At Tollgate Orthodontics we specialize in the latest in orthodontic technology and braces to our patients. Dr. Daniel Eves is proud to offer Damon System braces, including Damon Clear, and Invisalign clear aligners.

Below is some information on what can be done in the case of a braces emergency:

Sore Teeth

It is very common for your teeth to be a bit sore after your first visit to have your braces put on. To try and alleviate some of the immediate discomfort, you may take acetaminophen or another non-asprin pain reliever at regular intervals as needed while you’re adjusting to your new braces. You can also use a warm washcloth, heating pad or a warm salt-water rinse to help with the sore and tenderness of your jaw.

Wire Irritation

If you notice that the wire of your braces are causing your mouth irritation you can try to move the wire away from the area with an eraser or cotton swab. If the wire does not want to move, the next best thing would be to place some wax or cotton on the end of the wire so it is not causing the irritation to that area. If you find that the wire is causing you pain, you can cut the part of the wire that is causing the pain with nail clippers or small scissors. Be careful while doing this and make sure that the tool is sterilized in alcohol before attempting this.

Loose Bracket

If you find that the main wire or one of your brackets come loose please make sure to call our office first. You may need a bracket to be re-fitted and you will need to come in to the office for us to take care of this for you. If you find that you need to cut the wire or slide of a bracket off of the wire you can use small scissors or nail clippers after sterilizing them in alcohol first. If you find this is necessary, make sure to call our office as soon as you can to schedule a repair appointment.

Lost Separator

A lost separator is a very common occurrence during orthodontic treatment. If this does happen to you we suggest that you call our office to see if it needs to be replaced.

If you have any questions on your braces or on any of the above emergencies feel free to give our Jamestown or Warwick office a call at (401) 739-3900.
