Do I Need A Referral From My Family Dentist?

No, you don’t need a referral from your family dentist in order to have an appointment at our office. You can come in with one if you have one, but it is not required. The only thing that we would need from you would be for you to fill out our new patient forms, which you can find on our first visit information page.

When Should My Children Receive Their First Orthodontic Screening?

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that your children get their first orthodontic screening by the age of seven. It’s around this age that your children are going through a very rapid phase of development, which is ideal for fixing and preventing various orthodontic issues through treatment. If your kids do need treatment. This treatment will also help make their treatment with braces later during their teen years faster and more comfortable!

Can I Get Braces With Missing Teeth And Crowns?

Absolutely! In fact, the space from a missing tooth can help your teeth align better, since it gives your teeth more room to move around into their new ideal positioning. As for crowns, they are securely attached to the remaining portion of your natural teeth, so they will move as normal with braces.

How Much Do Braces Cost?

While we wish we could give you a number, the actual cost of braces varies from patient to patient. It all depends on the severity of the correction that needs to be made to your teeth, whether they need to move just a short distance or very far over a longer period of time.

Whatever the cost may be, all of us at Tollgate Orthodontics believe that everyone deserves to have a perfect, healthy smile. That’s why we offer financing options and work with you to help maximize your insurance benefits.

What Is The Initial Exam For?

When you come into our office for your first appointment, the initial exam that we conduct is so our doctor can give you an accurate diagnosis for treatment. During this exam, we will take x-rays to photograph your mouth, which gives your doctor a clear view of any orthodontic issues that you may have or could risk developing.

Do Braces Limit The Foods I Can Eat?

Unfortunately, yes. Despite being made from very durable stainless steel, they are not indestructible. Most of the foods you’ll need to avoid include hard candy, ice, sticky foods, and raw vegetables since they can damage the brackets or wires which will require repair. If the braces are damaged, it could potentially extend the amount of time you need to wear your braces, so do your best to avoid those dangerous foods!

If having your food selection limited isn’t ideal for you, Invisalign allows you to eat anything since they are completely removable!

Should I Brush More With Braces On?

Yes! When you have braces, it’s very easy for food particles to get caught in the brackets. If those particles aren’t cleaned away, it can quickly lead to the development of plaque. The last thing you want is to get those braces off only to have a smile that’s partially decayed, so make sure you always brush after eating, as well as before going to bed at night. Flossing is also crucial, since it’s excellent at getting in between the brackets and archwires of your braces.

What Do I Do During An Orthodontic Emergency?

If you have an orthodontic emergency, call our office immediately. Some issues can be handled over the phone, but we also set time aside for emergency appointments. If you have any questions about what constitutes an orthodontic emergency, we’ll be happy to go over everything over the phone or at your next appointment.

Can Adults Get Braces?

It’s never too late to get a perfect smile with Tollgate Orthodontics, with adult braces being a very popular treatment option. In fact, about 25% of all orthodontic patients are adults! As a quick disclaimer, treatment may take longer since your mouth and body are not developing anymore like they were when you were a teenager, but braces are still a very effective and comfortable treatment option for adults.

Will Kids With Early Treatment Need Full Braces Later On?

Early orthodontic treatment focuses on the prevention and correction of orthodontic issues that could develop into more serious problems in the future, such as a misaligned jaw or bite. During this time the permanent teeth have yet to fully develop, and can still possibly come in a strange angles or directions, requiring brace to straighten them. In most cases, early orthodontic treatment prepares kids for a more efficient and comfortable treatment a couple of years later once their permanent teeth are finished coming in.
