Many parents have questions about when they should consider orthodontic treatment for their children. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends an initial orthodontic evaluation at age seven, or even earlier if there are signs of orthodontic problems. By age seven, the first adult molars have erupted and established the back bite, allowing an orthodontist to effectively evaluate the spacing and positioning of the teeth. While orthodontic treatment might not be necessary, an evaluation can help determine if and when future treatment might be needed.

Orthodontic treatment is about more than creating a beautiful smile. Malocclusions (bad bites) can lead to numerous problems, which can include:

  • Difficulties brushing and flossing due to crowded teeth, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Difficulties chewing and swallowing
  • Speech impediments

What are the Benefits of Early Treatment?

Early evaluation and treatment allows an orthodontist to monitor the growth and development of your child’s teeth and jaw and determine when treatment will be most effective. Early treatment also helps correct issues that can become difficult, and more costly, to treat in the future. Other benefits include:

  • Creating room for crowded teeth
  • Influencing jaw growth to create facial symmetry
  • Reducing the risk of chipping or injuring protruding front teeth
  • Creating space for unerupted teeth
  • Avoiding tooth removal
  • Reducing overall treatment time

Ultimately, early intervention can lead to a healthier smile while reducing cost and time of treatment.
