April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and Tollgate Orthodontics wants to remind patients of the importance of regular oral cancer screenings. Early detection truly saves lives.

When oral cancer is caught in its earliest stages, the survival rate can be as high as 90 percent. Unfortunately, when the disease is discovered later, that rate can drop dramatically—often to 20–30 percent. That’s why routine dental checkups and oral cancer screenings with your family dentist are so critical, even if you’re not experiencing symptoms.

Oral Health & Orthodontic Treatment: Why Both Matter

Choosing orthodontic treatment is an important step toward improving your oral health, confidence, and smile. However, maintaining excellent oral hygiene during treatment is essential to ensure your new smile doesn’t come with unwanted dental issues.

At Tollgate Orthodontics, Dr. Eves and his team understand that orthodontic treatment is an investment of both time and money. Our goal is to make your treatment as efficient, comfortable, and successful as possible. Because braces and aligners can create extra spaces for food and plaque to collect, orthodontic patients are often more prone to cavities and gum issues if proper care isn’t taken.

That’s why our board-certified orthodontist believes education is key to protecting your oral health throughout treatment.

Essential Tools for a Healthy Smile with Braces

Having the right tools makes all the difference when cleaning around brackets and wires. While traditional brushing and flossing are still important, we often recommend the following orthodontic-friendly tools:

Proxabrush

This small, pipe-cleaner–style brush is ideal for cleaning between brackets and wires, reaching areas a standard toothbrush simply can’t.

Water Flosser (Water Pick)

A water flosser uses a steady stream of water to help remove food particles and plaque. While it doesn’t replace brushing or flossing, it’s an excellent addition to your daily routine.

Fluoride Products

Fluoride provides an extra layer of protection against cavities. We recommend using a fluoride toothpaste and, when appropriate, a fluoride mouth rinse.

Floss Threader

Flossing with braces can be challenging. A floss threader helps guide floss around wires and into tight spaces, making daily flossing much easier and more effective.

Proper Brushing Techniques During Orthodontic Care

At Tollgate Orthodontics, we recommend brushing after every meal, up to three times per day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush that fits comfortably in your mouth, and take your time to clean thoroughly.

For best results:

  • Brush the top teeth at a downward angle
  • Brush the bottom teeth at an upward angle
  • Pay close attention to the gumline, brackets, and wires

Some patients prefer brushing tooth by tooth, while others divide their mouth into sections—both methods work as long as you’re thorough.

Why Daily Flossing Is Non-Negotiable

Flossing at least once a day is essential during orthodontic treatment. Floss removes plaque and bacteria that brushing alone can’t reach. Skipping flossing can lead to:

  • Tooth decay
  • Gum disease
  • Permanent white spots on teeth after braces are removed

Consistent flossing helps ensure your smile looks just as healthy as it did straight after treatment.

A Healthy Diet Supports a Healthy Smile

Most orthodontic patients know to avoid sticky and crunchy foods, but limiting sugary snacks and drinks is just as important. Sugar feeds cavity-causing bacteria, increasing your risk of decay—especially around brackets and wires.
