Foods to Eat When You Get New Braces
Posted on 08/17/2017

It’s no secret that your teeth are going to hurt for a few days when you first get your braces on. And nothing is worse than when your teeth hurt and you’re hungry. To help alleviate some of your discomfort, here are some recipes & ideas for soft foods that won’t hurt your sensitive teeth when you first get your braces on.

Banana Smoothie

When I got my braces on, banana smoothies were a major staple of my diet for that first week. Here are a bunch of recipes for delicious and braces-friendly banana smoothies, straight from Chiquita themselves!

Oatmeal is another great breakfast food when your teeth are still tender from new braces. Ready for oatmeal with a twist? Try adding mashed pear and a little cinnamon for a yummy take on a classic breakfast food.

When you’re running out the door on the way to school, yogurt is an easy grab-and-go breakfast option that won’t hurt your teeth. Kind of like a smoothie, yogurt is nice and soft for that first day or two after you first get braces.

Fluffy Scrambled Eggs

You might want to save this food for day two or three after getting braces, as it might take a bit more chewing, depending on what kinds of veggies you put in your eggs. To make your eggs extra fluffy and easier to eat, add milk to the eggs and whisk them together vigorously. Whisking the eggs with milk adds air, which is what makes the eggs so fluffy. Check out this detailed recipe for fluffy scrambled eggs.

Guacamole with Salsa

I don’t know about you, but I’m always down for an excuse to eat guacamole. Mashed avocado and salsa are a great combo, especially because they’re soft foods and won’t aggravate your sensitive mouth. Here’s a yummy recipe for how to make the perfect guacamole.

Citrus Smoothie

We already reviewed the banana smoothie, but we just had to include the citrus smoothie as well because smoothies are such a great go-to for when you first get braces. We especially recommend the Citrus Protein Green Smoothie to help you get enough protein while you’re still nursing those sore pearly whites.

Our Favorite Citrus Smoothie Recipes:

Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potatoes are a feel-good, classic comfort food. Perfect for people who have just gotten their braces on, mashed potatoes are soft and require minimal chewing effort. Here’s an easy and quick recipe for amazing mashed potatoes.

Tomato Soup

Writing this blog post is sure making me hungry! Tomato soup is perfect for when your teeth just can’t handle any chewing. Just be a little wary of the temperature—really hot soup might aggravate your teeth even more. That being said, tomato soup is a pretty safe bet (especially for the first night or two when your teeth are extra sensitive). Here’s a simple recipe for delicious and comforting homemade tomato soup.

Macaroni and Cheese

Like tomato soup, macaroni and cheese is another tried-and-true comfort food for when your teeth are sensitive. There’s nothing quite as good as homemade mac 'n cheese, and this great recipe will alleviate some of the pain you may experience when you first get braces. Check out this yummy recipe for homemade macaroni and cheese.
